MISSION VIEJO : School Trustees May Add to Reservist Pay
The Saddleback Valley Unified School District board tonight will consider subsidizing the salaries of employees who are military reservists and are called to active duty.
For 180 days, the district would pay employees the difference between their military salary and their district salary if they are called up because of the Gulf War. The employees and their families would also keep their district medical insurance.
Federal law requires an employer to pay the difference for 30 days.
Deputy Supt. Ken Anderson said one district employee, a Trabuco Hills High School teacher, was called to active duty in December, but it is unclear how many other employees are reservists.
“We believe that this is a classy school district. . . . We want to help our employees who are called up,” Anderson said.
If the subsidy proposal passes, Saddleback Valley would follow the lead of several local government agencies that have adopted similar measures.
