A lawyer for Diego Maradona said today that the Argentine soccer star intends to clear his name and seek damages for published reports suggesting he paid for drugs and prostitutes.

Vincenzo Maria Siniscalchi said he assured a Naples prosecutor that Maradona wants to “furnish any needed explanation regarding reports appearing in the press.”

A Naples prosecutor said Wednesday that the Napoli star’s name came up in wiretapped phone conversations between suspected cocaine dealers. “There appeared to have been, on the part of Napoli player Diego Armando Maradona, a request for ‘stuff,’ not better specified, and for women (who are) under investigation,” prosecutor Vittorio Sbordone said.
