Bush to Request $56 Billion for First 3 Months of War
The Bush Administration plans to ask Congress next week for a supplemental appropriation of $56 billion to cover the costs of the first three months of the Persian Gulf War. But $41 billion of that amount would be repaid from contributions by other members of the allied coalition, a senior White House official said Thursday.
The $15 billion taxpayers will bear is in line with what the Administration had estimated at the time of submitting its budget earlier this month.
Earlier this week, the Administration said the allies were contributing about $9.7 billion of the nearly $11.1-billion cost of the Persian Gulf operation from Aug. 2, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, through Dec. 31, 1990.
