COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Baker Regains Control and Buckeyes Win

Even though Ohio State had scored 20 consecutive points against Wisconsin, the second-ranked Buckeyes lost control of the Big Ten Conference game Thursday night at Madison, Wis.

The Badgers came back and tied the game, 71-71, with 35 seconds left, but Mark Baker made a bank shot from the lane with one second left and the Buckeyes won, 73-71.

After Wisconsin tied the game on a three-point play by reserve center Lou Ely, Ohio State (21-1, 11-1 in the Big Ten) called time with 11 seconds left, and Baker regained control of the game for the Buckeyes.

He dribbled through his legs, reversed the ball in the lane and then double-clutched before making the game-winning shot over two defenders.

Tim Locum scored 23 points for Wisconsin, including 15 on three-point shots. The Badgers (11-10, 5-6) fell behind, 51-37, early in the second half, but three-point baskets by John Ellenson and Locum got them untracked.

Locum made two more three-point shots during a 24-9 run and his third long jump shot with 5:37 left gave the Badgers a 61-60 lead.

South Alabama 92, No. 9 Southern Mississippi 85--The Golden Eagles got to within 82-80 with 3:45 left at Hattiesburg, Miss., but Kevin McDaniels scored four points in the final 1:07 to clinch the victory.

The Jaguars (15-7), who lead the Sun Belt Conference, ended Southern Mississippi’s six-game winning streak. The Golden Eagles (18-3) lead the Metro Conference.

No. 10 East Tennessee State 90, Liberty 49--Keith Jennings became the Buccaneers’ all-time scoring leader in the easy victory at Lynchburg, Va.

Jennings, a 5-foot-7 senior point guard, scored 12 points and has 1,811 points. Tom Clinton scored 1,801 in 1958-61.

The Buccaneers are 22-3.

No. 14 Utah 77, Wyoming 72--Josh Grant scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half to help the Utes hold off the Cowboys in the Western Athletic Conference game at Salt Lake City.

Utah (23-2, 12-1) moved to within one victory of clinching its first outright league title since 1977. The loss dropped Wyoming (16-7, 6-5) from title contention.

EAST

Jasper Walker’s three-point basket with nine seconds left gave St. Peter’s a 58-57 victory over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference leader LaSalle at Philadelphia.

SOUTH

Jarvis Lang, the nation’s leading freshman scorer and rebounder, scored 20 of his 28 points in the second half and had 15 rebounds to help North Carolina Charlotte beat Western Kentucky, 91-77, in a Sun Belt Conference game at Charlotte, N.C. . . Troy State set an NCAA Division II scoring record in a 162-130 victory over Columbus College at Troy, Ala. The Trojans bettered the previous record of 160 points held by two teams, Stillman College (1966) and Livingston (1969).

MIDWEST

Mark Montgomery’s only basket of the game, a three-point shot with 33 seconds left, gave Michigan State a 55-53 victory over Northwestern in a Big Ten game at Evanston, Ill. Northwestern lost its 13th consecutive game and 16th in a row in the Big Ten. . . Acie Earl set a school season record for blocked shots to help Iowa defeat Minnesota, 82-69, in a Big Ten game at Iowa City. Earl broke Greg Stokes’ season record of 79 blocked shots set in 1983. The 6-foot-10 sophomore had six blocks to give him 84.

SOUTHWEST

Former Pomona High star Tank Collins scored a career-high 35 points and had 12 rebounds as New Orleans defeated Lamar, 85-75, at Beaumont, Tex., in an American South Conference game.

ROCKIES

Reserve center Gary Trost scored eight of his 17 points in the first five minutes of the second half to lead Brigham Young to an 83-76 Western Athletic Conference victory over New Mexico at Albuquerque, N.M. Trost replaced 7-foot-5 freshman Shawn Bradley, who picked up his third foul seven minutes into the game and didn’t return. New Mexico was led by Luc Longley’s 32 points.

WEST

Wilbert Hooker scored a career-high 30 points to lead Fresno State to a 107-86 Big West Conference victory over Utah State at Fresno. It was the first time Fresno State scored more than 100 points in a conference game since 1971. . . Don Lyttle scored 22 of his season-high 33 points in the second half to lead Pacific to an 82-74 Big West victory over San Jose State at Stockton. Terry Cannon led San Jose State with 31 points.
