VENTURA : Protest Planned to Discourage Enlistees

Share

A group of Ventura County residents will stage a nonviolent demonstration today to discourage young people from enlisting for service in the Persian Gulf.

The Nonviolent Action Group of Ventura County will hold a rally in Memorial Park and then march down Main Street to Ventura’s Armed Forces Recruiting Office near Loma Vista Road, where they plan to demonstrate and leaflet people considering enlisting in the military.

“We’re finding the war unbearable,” said Lucille Duffy, a member of the nonviolent group. “We have a need to express our anger at the slaughter.”

Another member, Coleen Ashly, said the newly formed group is an offshoot of the Ventura Coalition for Peace in the Persian Gulf.

The new group felt it was important to stage a nonviolent action to mark one month of hostilities.

Duffy expressed rage at President Bush for hiding from economic problems behind the American flag.
