Claremont : New Fire Station 62 OKd

Share

The City Council gave final approval Tuesday for a new county fire station to serve the affluent residential area of north Claremont.

By unanimous vote, the council amended the city’s zoning plan to clear the way for construction to begin in June on 1.2 acres at the northwest corner of Mills Avenue and Pomello Drive. Scheduled for completion in January, the facility will replace nearby Fire Station 62, a 59-year-old building that has been ruled seismically unsound.

The new station will house an engine, a smaller patrol truck and three to five firefighters, said Frank Brown, Los Angeles County assistant fire chief. Its staff will transfer from Station 62.

City approval is not necessary for the county to begin operation of a new station, but the county chose to follow standard city procedures as a goodwill gesture, Brown said. He said the architecture of the new building will be “low profile” and will blend with that of homes in the area.
