Ballets can be painful experiences for young children. They drag. They bore. They call for absolute silence.

But not all ballets.

The South Bay Ballet is holding a special children’s ballet that organizers say is going to be shorter, more vibrant and more informal than the usual adult version.

The company’s performance of “Peter and the Wolf” will run about an hour and will feature bright colors and much movement. Children will be participating in the dance, and laughter or whispering is welcomed.

“They can squirm, whisper or talk a little bit--that’s fine,” said Nancy Yokoe, whose daughter is performing. “In today’s world of violence and sex and drugs, it’s a mellow, pretty, musical evening.”

Performances will be held at the Norris Theatre, 27570 Crossfield Drive in Rolling Hills Estates, at 7 p.m. Saturday and at 2 and 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Ticket prices are childlike too--a mere $5. Call 542-9260 for information.
