Kieishsha Garnes scored 37 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead San Diego State to an 84-62 victory over Texas El Paso at Peterson Gym.

SDSU (13-10,6-3) also got big offensive performances from Carmelia Bloodsaw (23 points) and Michelle Miles (14) assists.

UTEP, led by Holly Russ’ 28 points, fell to 5-19, 2-7.

BASEBALL

USD won one game of a doubleheader with Loyola Marymount and protested the second before it was called with the score tied, 7-7, in the ninth inning.

It will be resumed April 9 at Loyola Marymount.

LMU’s Tim Williams is responsible for the postponement. He tripled with two out in the top of the ninth to chase in the tying run. In the bottom half of the inning, USD protested the game when LMU brought in two pitchers who already had pitched and left the mound.

USD (4-5-1, 3-2) won the first game on a two-out, bases-loaded single by freshman John Fenn that scored two runs and made it 6-5.

LMU fell to 6-7, 2-3.

San Diego State came back to win the second game of a three-game series with San Jose State, 4-3, to even the series at a game apiece. The final game will be played today at 2 p.m. at SDSU’s Smith Field.

Brent Ferguson got the game-winning RBI when he hit a two-out, two-run double in the fifth.

SDSU improved to 6-3 and San Jose State fell to 4-4.

Last year, USIU catcher Mike Murphy suffered a serious knee injury and faced reconstructive surgery after a collision at home plate against UCLA. Saturday, with two outs and two strikes on him in the eighth inning, Murphy blasted a two-run homer to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Gulls (5-6) to a 3-1 victory at Jackie Robinson Field. Santana High graduate Jeff Matranga (2-2) got the victory and freshman Chris Townsend from Crawford picked up his third save for USIU.

UCSD suffered a doubleheader loss to The Master’s College, 4-2 and 7-5.

UCSD first baseman Ted White went three for six on the day and drove in three runs in the second game.

The Master’s Brent Sostrom was three for three in the second game and had the game-winning triple in the eighth inning.

UCSD falls to 1-5. The Master’s improves to 4-3.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene (19-7, 8-1) clinched a tie for the Golden State Athletic Conference with a 98-78 victory over host California Baptist College.

Point Loma, which shot 58% from the floor, has one conference game remaining against Southern California College.

Christy Stevens led Point Loma, scoring 18 points in the first half en route to 25. Shannon Abrams added 21, 16 of which came in the first half. Camille Armijo also was in double figures in the first half, scoring 12 and finishing with 14.

California Baptist is 15-12, 3-5.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Baptist (5-5, 16-11) defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 68-66, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Cal Baptist.

Rusty Fallin scored 27 to lead Point Loma (3-7, 11-17). Mark Bulgin added 14.
