‘Pop Rocks’ Spark Suit: Kraft General Foods Inc. sued a Korean candy company, alleging patent and trademark infringement stemming from its attempts to sell carbonated candies called Pop Rocks. In the federal lawsuit against Jeong Woo Confectionery Co., Kraft asserted that it holds the rights to the Pop Rocks name and the patented “method of gasified confection” used in the candy, which “pops” when wet. Another Korean business obtained the license to distribute the candies in Asia and Africa, but the defendant took over the other company’s manufacturing facilities after it went out of business, the lawsuit said. Since the takeover, Kraft, which has sold more than $25 million worth of Pop Rocks since 1985 through its Carbonated Candy Ventures, contended that the defendant has illegally embarked on a campaign to sell Pop Rocks in the United States. The suit seeks an injunction to stop the sales venture and unspecified damages. (Case No. 01-0751. Filed Feb. 11).
