From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Drug traffickers claimed responsibility for a car bombing in Medellin that killed 22 people and wounded 140. The bomb exploded near the bullfighting ring in Colombia’s second-biggest city as thousands were flooding out of the arena. The bomb was aimed at police providing security for the event, said Gen. Gustavo Pardo, an army commander. Nine police officers were among the 22 killed. About 250 police officers were killed last year in attacks by the Medellin cocaine cartel. The blast flattened street-vending stands and left a large crater in the street.
