War IN BRIEF : ISRAEL : Raytheon Experts Work on Patriots

Experts from the U.S. maker of the Patriot anti-missile system, Raytheon, are in Israel to improve the performance of the nation’s only defense against Iraqi missile attacks, Israel Radio said. The Americans have been in Israel for three days, it said. The United States rushed several Patriot batteries to Israel after Iraq began firing Scud missiles at Tel Aviv and Haifa. Patriot missiles have been used to intercept some of the Scuds. Raytheon, of Lexington, Mass., maintains that the missile was never meant to defend cities because of its short effectiveness range of 40-50 miles. It was originally designed to protect airfields.
