WOMEN’S BASKETBALL : UCLA Falls to Stanford

A trapping defense and strong inside play from Val Whiting and Julie Zeilstra helped 11th-ranked Stanford come from behind and defeat UCLA, 91-77, Sunday in a Pacific 10 Conference women’s basketball game at Pauley Pavilion.

Whiting had 26 points and 14 rebounds and Zeilstra had 32 points and 15 rebounds as the Cardinal (19-4, 12-1) overcame a 44-34 halftime deficit.

UCLA (12-11, 7-6) led by as many as 17 points in the first half, thanks to 24 points by guard Rehema Stephens. She finished with 34.

USC 74, California 48--Freshman Lisa Leslie scored 10 of her 18 points in the first seven minutes as the Trojans won by their largest margin of victory since defeating Cal by 32 points in 1988.

After leading 35-24 at halftime, the Trojans (13-10, 7-6) started the second half with a 10-0 run.
