The Pits: Cher’s plastic surgery and tattoos are famous, but designer Bob Mackie, who designs Cher’s barely-there costumes, says people underappreciate her underarms. “She has beautiful armpits. There were no lines, no wrinkles, not a puff or a pouch or anything . . . . I’m always very careful about armpits.”

Moderation: One of the founders of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, Cindi Lamb, doesn’t believe she has joined the ranks of the enemy by teaming up with a beer-industry group as an alcohol-education adviser. Lamb helped launch MADD in 1980 after a car crash with a drunk driver left her infant daughter with injuries that later claimed her life. Lamb admits to drinking beer and says she will steer around those anti-alcohol groups that “preach” to people.

The Wall Is Down: When the New Yorker magazine moves across the street to new offices in Manhattan, a section of wall covered with fading sketches of football players, floppy flowers and a broken clock will move too. The pencil works are by author James Thurber, who worked at the magazine for 34 years. The wall section will be on display in the new facility.

Premonition: Washingtonian magazine owner Phil Merrill, who lives in Brussels, showed up at his magazine’s D.C. offices recently, surprising Editor Jack Limpert. Merrill, who is also assistant secretary general of NATO, confided to Limpert that he had gallstones and had scheduled an operation. It just so happened that the magazine had already planned an article on gallbladder operations. The owner advised the editor: “Don’t do any stories on open-heart surgery.”
