SPORTSCOPE : UCLA, Pepperdine Tennis Teams Play in Tournament

The No. 2-ranked UCLA men’s tennis team (10-0 overall, 2-0 in Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division play) and No. 16 Pepperdine (7-0) have entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn. National Indoor Team Championships.

Pepperdine was scheduled to open the tournament on Wednes day against No. 18 Harvard. The Bruins, seeded second in the tournament behind Stanford, will meet the winner of a first-round match between North Carolina and Utah. The tournament ends Sunday.

Last week UCLA defeated Arizona, 5-1, and Arizona State, 6-0, setting a record of 49 consecutive victories at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Pepperdine defeated UC Davis, 8-1, UC Santa Barbara, 9-0, and No. 25 UC Irvine, 7-2, last week.

The No. 3 UCLA women’s tennis team (7-0 overall, 2-0 in Pac-10 play) will play host to Oregon at 1:30 p.m. Friday and No. 11 Pepperdine (11-0 as the week began) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Last week the Bruins beat Arizona, 6-2-1, and Arizona State, 5-4.

The No. 1 UCLA women’s softball team, 15-0 after winning last week’s University of Arizona tournament, will play host to Cal Poly Pomona in a double-header at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Sunset Canyon diamond.

In the Arizona tournament, the Bruins won seven games, including a 4-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the semifinals and a 6-0 defeat of Arizona State in the championship game.

Bruin pitcher-third baseman Lisa Fernandez hit .438 and had nine runs batted in. Teammate outfielder Yvonne Gutierrez hit .433 with three home runs and seven RBIs. On the mound, Fernandez pitched two no-hit games and extended her string of scoreless innings to 85 dating to last season. She has also won 15 games in a row.

The Pepperdine baseball team (8-3-1 overall, 4-2 in West Coast Conference play at the start of the week) will play host to UC Irvine at 2 p.m. Friday, play at UC Irvine at 1 p.m. Saturday and entertain UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Pepperdine and USC tied, 5-5, last week when the game was called after eight innings because of darkness. Pepperdine, ranked No. 11 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 18 by Baseball America, also won two of three games from St. Mary’s last week.

The No. 2 UCLA men’s gymnastics team (7-1) will compete Sunday at No. 6 New Mexico. Last week the Bruins placed second to Arizona State at the Southwest Cup at Tempe, Ariz. UCLA junior Chainey Umphrey was first in the all-around competition with a 57.2 and senior teammate Terry Notary scored a career-high 55.75 and finished second.

The No. 10 UCLA women’s gymnastics team (7-2) will compete against Southern Utah and Brigham Young on Saturday at Provo, Utah. Last week the Bruins scored a season-high 191.15, but lost to No. 3 Alabama by an three points. UCLA senior Yolande Mavity had a career-high 9.8 on the uneven bars.

The Pepperdine men’s volleyball team (6-2 overall, 3-2 in the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. play) will play host to No. 3 Cal State Northridge (8-2, 4-1) at 7:30 tonight at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Last week the Waves, ranked No. 6 by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. and No. 5 by Volleyball Monthly, defeated Loyola Marymount in five games. Pepperdine leaders in kills were Tom Sorenson with 27, Dijon Douphner with 23 and Lee LeGrande with 21.

The UCLA men’s volleyball team (4-4 overall, 4-1 in the WIVA) will play host to Loyola Marymount (2-7, 1-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the John Wooden Center.

The Bruins, ranked No. 7 in the AVCA poll and No. 6 by Volleyball Monthly, beat UC Irvine in three games last week and lost to No. 1 USC in three. Against Irvine, senior Carl Henkel had a match-high 17 kills. Against USC, sophomore Dan Landry had a career-high 20 kills and freshman teammate Tim Kelly had 18 kills and nine blocks.

The No. 6 UCLA women’s swim team (7-2, overall, 3-2 in Pac-10 play) ended the regular season by upsetting No. 5 USC, 152-148. Against the Trojans, senior Sheri Smith was a triple winner in the 1,650-yard freestyle, the 500 freestyle and the 200 butterfly, and junior Kris Stoudt was a double winner in the 100 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. The Pac-10 championships are March 14-16 in Seattle.

The No. 8 UCLA men’s swim team (6-2 overall, 2-2 in Pac-10 play) will entertain No. 2 USC (10-0, 4-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday at the UCLA men’s gymnasium pool. The meet will be dedicated to the late Chris Silva, former Bruin swimmer.

The Pepperdine women’s swim team will compete today through Saturday in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships at Nevada Las Vegas. Conference teams include Air Force, Loyola Marymount, Northern Arizona, Nevada, Cal State Northridge, Cal State San Bernardino, the University of San Diego and UC San Diego.

The Santa Monica College men’s and women’s swim teams will open dual-meet competition in the Western State Conference on Friday at Cuesta College.

Eight Western State Conference track and field teams will open the season in two quadrangular meets Friday at Santa Monica College. One meet will feature SMC, Los Angeles Valley, Ventura and College of the Canyons, and the other will include West Los Angeles, Glendale, Moorpark and Oxnard.

Field events will start at 2 p.m. and races at 3. The discus competi tion will be at 1 p.m. at Santa Monica High.

The UCLA men’s and women’s track teams will compete Sunday in the 50th annual Cal State Long Beach relays on campus.

At last week’s indoor invitational at Northern Arizona University, four UCLA performers took firsts. The men’s shot put was won by Eric Bergreen with a personal-best 62-8, Tracie Millet took first in the women’s shot with a personal best indoors of 53-6 1/2, Janeene Vickers won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.73, and Jay Borick recorded a 17-4 1/4 in the pole vault.

The UCLA women’s basketball team (12-11 overall, 7-6 in Pac-10 play) will play Friday night at Oregon (10-12, 3-9) and Sunday afternoon at Oregon State (13-9, 6-7). Bruin guard Rehema Stephens leads the Pac-10 with an average of 26.7 points.

The Pepperdine women’s basketball team (13-13 overall, 6-6 in West Coast Conference play) will end its season when it plays at 5 p.m. this evening at Santa Clara (23-3, 11-1) and at 5 p.m. Saturday at the University of San Diego (13-12, 8-4). Wave forward Shannon Frowiss is averaging team-high marks of 17.2 points and 8.6 rebounds.
