WORLD IN BRIEF : COLOMBIA : 7 Slain in Rescue of Woman, Police Say

Colombian police said they shot seven people to death while rescuing a kidnaped businesswoman in the cocaine capital of Medellin. They said a special anti-kidnaping unit raided a house near Medellin, base of Colombia’s biggest drug cartel 160 miles northwest of Bogota. The police unit rescued businesswoman Maria del Rio Vargas, who was kidnaped a week ago and for whose release a ransom of $860,000 had been demanded. The woman was unharmed in the shootout, police said.
