Police seized nearly 400 pounds of marijuana and arrested four people in what officials described Friday as the largest marijuana bust in city history.

The marijuana was estimated to be worth more than $1 million, Police Capt. Ron Kaczor said.

Arrested on Thursday were Ernesto Ruiz, 38, of Chino; Jenner Sagastume, 28, no known address; and Marcos Galindo, 26, and his wife, Barbara, 24, both of Fontana.

Narcotics investigators had arranged to buy 70 pounds of marijuana from the suspects and met them at a Fontana shopping center Thursday afternoon, Kaczor said. The four were arrested after investigators exchanged $73,000 in cash for the drug, he said.

Ruiz, who investigators believe is linked to a marijuana trafficking ring based in Mexico, threw down a handgun when the investigators identified themselves, Kaczor said.

Police then searched Ruiz’s home in Chino and found more than 300 pounds of marijuana, Kaczor said.
