THE GULF WAR: The International Front : Wool as a Spill Weapon
Special spheres of New Zealand WOOL, which can effectively SOAK UP 40 TIMES THEIR OWN WEIGHT in oil, may be used in the cleanup of oil spilled in the Persian Gulf. A New Zealand manufacturer, Donaghys Textiles Ltd., said recent tests proved successful. Donaghys had just started making oil containment booms and oil absorption booms from wool balls when the war began last month. Researchers say wool has the capacity to absorb up to 40 times its own weight in viscous oils.
