SAVE LA: An Environmental Resource Directory by Tricia R. Hoffman & Nan Kathryn Fuchs (Chronicle: $8.95). Hoffman and Fuchs have compiled a handy guidebook for people concerned with living ecologically responsible lives in a city that seems dedicated to the needless consumption of gasoline, water and plastic. The demand for some of the items listed (e.g. composting equipment) may be minimal, but many of these products belong in every Southern California home: efficient insulation, ultra low-flow toilets, recycled paper products, etc. A valuable resource when the drought is revealing the artificiality of many aspects of the famed L.A. life style.
