Double Time at Ft. Sheridan

Share

As it has for more than a century, Illinois’ Ft. Sheridan is polishing soldiers’ skills and sending them off to war. But at its busiest time in many years, FT. SHERIDAN is also going out of business--one of 85 military installations targeted in 1988 for closure by the Pentagon. So the FORT IS DOING DOUBLE DUTY: On one floor of a base building, six people work full time preparing for the base to shut by 1995. Directly below, others work frantically to relay Pentagon directives to base personnel. At the fort’s paint shed, some are working 24-hour shifts to paint equipment in desert camouflage while others ensure that the base is free of pollution. Even the public affairs office has split itself in two.
