PACIFIC 10 BASKETBALL : Arizona State Pulls Away in Second Half

Freshman Dwayne Fontana scored 15 points and Isaac Austin had 11 of his 14 points in the second half as Arizona State beat California, 87-78, in a Pacific 10 Conference game Sunday.

Matt Anderson added 13 points and freshman Stevin Smith 12 for the Sun Devils, 16-8 overall and 7-7 in league play.

California fell to 11-14 and 7-9, despite Brian Hendrick’s 24 points and 10 rebounds.

The Golden Bears, who trailed at halftime, 37-36, took their only lead of the second half on Hendrick’s layup with 19:31 remaining.

Austin’s turnaround jumper started an 8-0 run, which he capped with two free throws for a 45-38 lead with 16:56 left.

Smith, Anderson and freshman Jamal Faulkner each made three-point goals for a 68-52 lead with 7:04 to play.

California never got closer than eight points from there.

The Sun Devils, who trailed at one point, 11-4, took the halftime lead on two Emery Lewis free throws with 14 seconds left.
