Unocal to Assess Benzene Contamination: The Los Angeles oil company recently found evidence of underground contamination by cancer-causing benzene, as well as toluene and xylene, two other refined petroleum products, on the grounds of its Wilmington facility. Preliminary tests show high concentrations of all three contaminants, with 13,000 parts of benzene per billion of water, compared to federal and state limits in ground water of one part per billion. Unocal said it will conduct further tests and clean up the contamination.
