Leland M. Shannon, 63, dean of the Graduate Division and Office of Research Affairs at UC Riverside and a recognized expert on plant biochemistry. He became dean in 1980 and served until his death. During his tenure, research grants increased from $13 million to more than $23 million annually. He came to UC Riverside in 1957 as an associate professor of chemistry from UCLA, where he held a similar post. As a scientist, Shannon studied the structure and function of plant physiology, publishing more than 80 articles in that area. He also was a former president of the Western Assn. of Graduate Schools. On Feb. 18 in Riverside of complications of leukemia.
