JAPAN: The European Community Commission, citing a widening of its trade deficit with Japan, wants Japan to take action to open its market to foreign goods and services. EC Competition Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan, in a speech in Tokyo last week, said Europe wants evidence that Japan is prepared to adopt measures that would make it easier for Western firms to get access to Japanese markets. He suggested that the EC and Japan draft a “high-level political agreement” listing the goals of open trade relations and providing for regular high-level consultations.
