FOUNTAIN VALLEY : 2 School Volunteers Honored for Service

Share

Two longtime school volunteers have received the Fountain Valley School District Outstanding Community Service Award for their work benefiting students throughout the district.

Roger Belgen was honored for his 18 years of service as a district board trustee and 23 years as a coach for various school and community sports teams. As a board member, he was credited with being instrumental in getting approval for computers and multimedia equipment for instructional purposes in the classroom.

He was awarded the Marian Bergeson Award--the highest honor in the county for a school board member--in 1987 and was the Fountain Valley Citizen of the Year in 1983. A resident of Fountain Valley since 1966, Belgen is employed at McDonnell Douglas in Huntington Beach and continues to volunteer as the coach of a girls’ basketball team and as director of the Straight Talk Counseling Clinic.

Also honored on Feb. 14 for her services was Kay Hoag, who is in her eighth year of volunteering for the district. As president of the Superintendent and Parents Council, Hoag helped to initiate art programs and exhibits supported entirely by volunteers after budget cuts slashed art instruction at most of the schools.
