Regatta Is Entered by Six Countries

Nine sailboats from six countries have entered the world championship regatta for the new International America’s Cup Class at San Diego May 4-11, though fewer are expected to compete. The formal competition is scheduled for 1992.

Bill Koch’s America-3 defense syndicate and Italy’s Il Moro di Venezia challenge team each entered two boats before Friday’s deadline, the America’s Cup Organizing Committee said. Single boats were entered by New Zealand, Japan’s Nippon Challenge and France. Team Dennis Conner and the Soviet Union filed late entries Monday.

Also, the Trustees Committee ruled that Il Moro may not use a test tank outside Italy, and that the survivor of the challenger trials may not substitute a boat originally measured with another between the trials and the defense round.
