A retired Air Force brigadier general says the 30,000 women who played a role in the Persian Gulf War are just one more reason for building a MEMORIAL HONORING AMERICAN SERVICEWOMEN. In 1986, Congress authorized the construction of the Women in Military Service Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. However, no federal funds were made available, and a fund-raising effort was initiated. Wilma Vaught, who served 28 years in the Air Force, said that U.S. troops in the Gulf War were referred to as “men and women” for the first time. “And that’s the way it should be. . . . It’s the nation’s men and women working together. . . . They were right there from the beginning, and they remain over there today.”
