Long Beach : Parents to Have Option on Release of Student Names

Military recruiters may continue to receive the names and addresses of Long Beach and Lakewood high school students, but only if parents allow it, school board members have decided.

Beginning next fall, parents will be asked through student information cards whether they want the names of their children released to military recruiters and others. Until now, the Long Beach Unified School District has released directory information, except for telephone numbers, without consulting parents.

“This way, parents get to make the choice,” board member Harriet Williams said.

The district charges 25 cents for each page of names. During the 1989-90 academic year, the district received requests for directory information from the military, the city of Long Beach, Long Beach City College and others, including a couple of trade colleges.
