Bonsall
About 140,000 gallons of sewage a day have been flowing into the San Luis Rey River since Friday because of an undetected break in a sewer line in the Bonsall area, authorities said.
The leak began when last week’s storm washed away about 300 feet of a 12-inch-wide sewer line, county health officials said Wednesday. The break in the line, which lies in the Horseranch Creek bed, was not discovered by the Rainbow Municipal Water District until 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The water district has no estimate of when the spill can be staunched, and signs warning of contamination have been posted in public fishing and swimming areas along the river.
The signs are posted near the intersection of Dentro de Lomas and Old River roads in Bonsall and around the area where the river enters the ocean in Oceanside. The warning signs will remain until waters are safe for recreational use, health officials said.
