FLICKS FILM AND VIDEO FILE : Not Quite Gospel : Ojai society is back with ‘Jesus of Montreal,’ a Cannes winner that takes a different look at the Resurrection of Jesus.

After a week’s hiatus, the Ojai Film Society will be back in business Sunday, with a showing of the 1989 French-Canadian film “Jesus of Montreal.” The R-rated motion picture was written and directed by Denys Arcand, who in 1986 directed “The Decline of the American Empire.”

“Jesus of Montreal” was a winner at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign film.

The story is about a little-known actor who is commissioned to do a version of the annual production of the death and Resurrection of Jesus. He and some of his actor friends put together a revisionist version that the church attempts to shut down.

Showtime is 4:30 p.m. at the Ojai Playhouse.

Universal Pictures has backed out of the Richard Attenborough film on the life of Charlie Chaplin, titled “Charlie.” No one knows what this means for those people who have been hanging out in Bardsdale, just outside Fillmore.

How, one might ask, would a film--scheduled to begin production this month in London--affect the good people of Ventura County?

It appears that those people crawling around Fillmore were doing location scouting for the film.

One of the spots that they have been looking at is the old, vacant Sanitary Dairy. The story goes that Chaplin’s first studio, once he began making Hollywood films, was in an orange grove. The film crew is trying to get the dairy to look like the studio.

Attenborough hopes to begin filming in May.

A benefit presentation of “Dances with Wolves,” scheduled for Monday at the Westlake Village Theatres, has shifted venues. The new site is the U.A. Cinemas at the Warner Center in Woodland Hills.
