Culver City : City Aids Museum Effort

Share

The Culver City Redevelopment Agency agreed this week to provide financial support to the Culver City Historical Society to aid the group in its plans for a city museum.

In 1988, the agency allocated $885,000 to move the “Witch’s House of Beverly Hills” back to Culver City, where it was built by a movie studio, for use as a city museum. But those plans fell through last May when the owners withdrew their offer to donate the storybook-style house.

The Historical Society is considering the downtown Citizen Publishing Co. building as a potential site for the museum. It is the only Culver City building on the National Register of Historic Places, and it has been identified as a landmark structure by the city’s Historic Preservation Program Advisory Committee.

The redevelopment agency on Monday agreed in principle to help the society lease the site for the first 10 years. The society would be responsible for operating costs and an as yet unspecified portion of the lease.

The museum would house photographs, posters, unpublished film industry stills and a costume collection the city purchased from MGM Studios. The items are being stored in the city maintenance yard.
