Turner Tidbits: Broadcast mogul Ted Turner told USC journalism students in an informal talk Wednesday night “not to expect to be welcomed with open arms when you come into an entrenched industry,” but “just because you have an idea and it doesn’t sell doesn’t mean you should give up.” Turner started Cable News Network with $20 million 10 years ago, and saw CNN come of age during its coverage of the Gulf War. Now, he can think of only one scenario that would force the network to go off the air. “I’m still really worried about the dangers of nuclear war,” he said. Should the network ever be forced to sign off, Turner has a videotape ready of the Armed Services Band playing “Nearer My God to Thee.” “It’s the song the band was playing as the Titanic sank,” he explained.
