Expen$ive Toy$: Take your check book, not your kids to this toy sale. Nineteenth and 20th-Century American and European toys from the collection of Lawrence Scripps Wilkinson will be auctioned at Christie’s East in New York on Tuesday. Included: a Steven and Brown painted tin-plate hoop with lady and flag, circa 1870 (estimated price: $15,000 to $20,000); a Carette tin-plate key-wind limousine, circa 1908 ($7,000 to $10,000); and an Ives tin-plate and wood wind-up doll of “Old Uncle Tom, the Fiddler,” circa. 1885, in its original box ($5,000 to $7,000). Wilkinson established the Detroit Antique Toy Museum in 1979, but says the museum is selling part of the collection “because we don’t have room or need all of these toys.”
