Dealing With Water Shortage
Mark Reisner’s revealing article (“Are We So Parched We’ll Change?” Commentary, Feb. 27) on the real offenders in our current water crisis leaves me with many questions. Among them: Why does California grow alfalfa, rice and cotton? How is it possible that agriculture, representing 10% of our state economy, is able to receive 83% of water allotments?
Most people I know are terribly concerned about the water situation we will face later this year, and are taking extraordinary means to conserve water usage now. Given the conditions stated in the article, there is obviously an extremely powerful agriculture lobby in this state.
