American Air Delays Receipt of Second MD-11: American Airlines delayed receipt of a second MD-11 jumbo jet from McDonnell Douglas Corp. while the manufacturer solves problems in the plane’s cockpit computer, an airline spokesman said. American discovered the problems during tests of its first MD-11 last month. Engineers from McDonnell Douglas and its contractors have been working with those from American to fix the MD-11 problem, which causes computer screens in the cockpit to malfunction. Some of the screens take the place of dials that display a plane’s performance, a concept called a “glass cockpit.”
