Notre Dame’s Raghib Ismail saw his streak...
Notre Dame’s Raghib Ismail saw his streak of 23 consecutive heat victories in the 55-meter dash end, then came back to gain today’s final at the NCAA indoor track and field championships in Indianapolis with the day’s fastest time, 6.13 seconds.
Ismail, undefeated in a collegiate final, saw his streak of heat victories end in the preliminaries when he eased up with about 20 meters left and coasted to second place in 6.19. Washington State’s Augustine Olobia of Nigeria won the heat in 6.18 and finished second to Ismail in the semifinals at 6.14.
“I was hoping (the streak) would end pretty soon because people like to make a big thing out of it,” Ismail said.
Kenya’s Jonah Koech of Iowa State lowered his meet record in the men’s 5,000 meters to 13:36.64 from 13:37.94. Tracie Millett of UCLA successfully defended her shotput title with an effort of 54 feet 3 1/4 inches.
