COUNTYWIDE : Expected Storm Bypasses County

A storm that had been expected to drop up to an inch of rain on area cities and agricultural fields skirted most of the county Sunday, leaving only slight moisture and cold weather instead.

By late Sunday, heavy rain was falling in Santa Barbara County, but it was only sprinkling in Ventura County. Light showers were expected to subside by midnight.

Temperatures Sunday night were expected to dip below freezing in the Santa Rosa Valley, Piru, Ojai and the Oxnard Plain, said National Weather Service Agricultural Meteorologist Terry Schaeffer.

Schaeffer recommended that strawberry and citrus growers in the inland valleys activate wind machines or other means to protect their crops against the frost.

Cool weather was expected to continue today, bringing frost at night and daytime temperatures in the 50s and 60s, Schaeffer said.

Tuesday should be slightly warmer, he said.

Schaeffer said there is a chance of rain Wednesday and Friday.

Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol closed California 33 about seven miles north of Ojai at Wheeler Gorge on Sunday because of rockslides from hillsides left unstable after heavy rains earlier this month.
