Santa Ana School District to Vote on Proposed Cuts

Share

The Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education will vote tonight on a series of proposed cuts that would trim $10.7 million from the district’s budget next year.

The cuts, which could result in more than 100 layoffs and reductions in several academic programs, will be necessary if Gov. Pete Wilson’s proposed 1991-92 state budget is approved in its entirety, district officials said.

The district, Orange County’s largest, outlined the cuts at a special study session last week. It must still find a way to trim an additional $4 million as it prepares for “a worst-case scenario,” Supt. Rudy M. Castruita said.

Although the district’s final budget won’t be adopted until late summer, the cuts must be voted on immediately because the state’s education code requires that preliminary layoff notices for teachers and administrators be received by March 15.

Because district officials anticipate a large crowd, tonight’s board meeting will be held in the multipurpose room of MacArthur Intermediate School, 600 W. Alton Ave. in Santa Ana. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
