San Diego State Women Top Notre Dame in Tennis

San Diego State, ranked 15th, defeated Notre Dame, 7-2, in a women’s tennis match at SDSU Monday. No. 1 Aztec Dorey Brandt defeated Tracy Barton, 6-2, 6-2. SDSU’s Nicole Storto defeated Christy Faustmann, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 3. Brandt and Storto defeated Faustmann and Lisa Tholen, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles. San Diego State improved to 5-4. Notre Dame dropped to 8-5.

Point Loma fell to Northern Arizona, 6-3, in a nonconference match at PLNC. PLNC (6-5) won at No. 2, No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles. Kelly Massa defeated Raquel Phillips, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 and Sue Woodling defeated Alex Degher, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Massa and Woodling defeated Phillips and Alex Kappel by injury default.

BASEBALL

Portland defeated the University of San Diego, 12-1, in a nonconference game at USD’s Cunningham Stadium. Jason Geis hit a two-run double to give Portland a 2-1 first-inning lead. USD is 11-11-2. Portland improved to 6-5.

Point Loma Nazarene fell to Biola, 2-1. Rich Miller and Ron Caton each went two for four for PLNC (10-10). Eric Polom (5-0) struck out six and walked one in a complete game for Biola (7-9).

BASKETBALL

U.S. International’s Kevin Bradshaw was named to the Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention team. Bradshaw, a 6-6 senior guard, averaged 37 points a game. On Jan. 5, Bradshaw scored 72 points against Loyola Marymount to break Pete Maravich’s NCAA record of 69 points against a Division I team.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Poway High’s Amy Burke, a 6-0 middle blocker, signed a national letter of intent to play for Villanova next fall, Wildcat Coach David Barkley said.

“We are very excited about signing Amy,” Barkley said. “She has excellent physical capabilities and could challenge for playing time immediately. She is a good blocker who should only get better.”
