NBA ROUNDUP : Spurs Beat Jazz, 105-96, Lead Midwest by Game

David Robinson scored 33 points and the San Antonio Spurs took a one-game lead over Utah in the Midwest Division by turning back the Jazz, 105-96, Monday night at San Antonio.

Karl Malone scored 34 points for Utah, which lost its third consecutive game, and John Stockton had 20 assists.

The Spurs, who have won five consecutive games, took a 97-87 lead with 3:16 left when Sean Elliott, who scored 18 points, capped an 8-2 run with two free throws.

Utah rallied on two three-point shots by Stockton and one from Malone, cutting the deficit to 101-96 with 1:10 remaining, but San Antonio finished off the victory with four free throws.

San Antonio’s Paul Pressey was fouled by Malone and suffered a sprained right knee ligament with 10 seconds left and had to be carried off the court.

The Spurs set a club record in the first quarter, making 77.3% of their shots (17 of 22) and taking a 38-24 lead.

New York 90, New Jersey 85--Patrick Ewing made only six of 18 shots but scored 12 of his 20 points in the final 8:52 to rally the Knicks past the Nets at New York.

The Nets, who lost their 13th consecutive road game and sixth in a row overall, didn’t trail in the second half until Ewing hit two free throws to give the Knicks an 86-85 lead with 36 seconds left.

Ewing, who had 16 rebounds, stole the inbounds pass from Chris Morris at midcourt and drove for a dunk, giving the Knicks a three-point lead. Charles Oakley completed the scoring with a last-second layup.

The Nets, who led by as many as 14 points in the first half, had an 83-78 lead with 4:24 left but were outscored, 12-2, down the stretch to lose for the 27th time in 32 road games this season.

Sam Bowie scored 24 points for New Jersey, and Kiki Vandeweghe had 16 for the Knicks, who have won eight of nine games.

Milwaukee 96, Detroit 85--Dale Ellis came off the bench to score 30 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, leading the Bucks past the Pistons at Auburn Hills, Mich.

Milwaukee moved to within one game of second-place Detroit, which has lost four of five home games, in the Central Division.

The Bucks led, 71-67, entering the fourth quarter and broke the game open with a 10-point run midway through the period to take an 85-71 lead.

Danny Schayes added 22 points for the Bucks; Joe Dumars scored 17 points for Detroit.

Portland 104, Cleveland 96--Clyde Drexler scored 26 points and the Trail Blazers broke a two-game losing streak by downing the Cavaliers at Portland, Ore.

The Pacific Division-leading Trail Blazers increased their lead over the Lakers to 2 1/2 games.

The Cavaliers trailed by 11 points in the third quarter, but closed to 92-90 on Brad Daugherty’s basket with 4:18 left.

Drexler hit a jumper with 3:27 left and a free throw at 2:52 to make it 97-92, and Buck Williams’ three-point play with 2:01 left insured Portland’s win at 100-92.

Daugherty had 24 points for Cleveland.
