‘A’s Robber’ Pulls 14th Bank Heist
The “A’s robber,” who is partial to wearing an Oakland A’s baseball cap when he hits banks, struck for the 14th time in a month when he held up a University City bank Tuesday morning, a San Diego Police Department spokesman said.
At 10:17 a.m. Tuesday, the cap-wearing robber walked into a Coast Federal Bank in the 4000 block of Governor Drive and handed a teller a note which read, “I have a gun. Give me all the money in your drawer,” police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
The robber escaped with about $750 in cash and was last seen jogging east on Governor Drive, Robinson said.
Last week, the same robber struck four banks in the Pacific Beach and Midway-Point Loma areas, where most of the 14 banks have been robbed, said Robinson.
The same man is suspected of robbing a Wells Fargo bank in the 1700 block of Garnet Avenue on March 4, a Security Pacific Bank in the 1100 block of Rosecrans Street last Wednesday, a Bank of America branch in the 1200 block of Rosecrans Street on Thursday and a Glendale Federal Bank in the 1900 block of Garnet Avenue on Friday.
Police suspect that the man began the string of robberies about Feb. 5. He is described as a white male, between 5-foot-8 and 6-foot, 150 to 165 pounds, with a thin build, very short blond or light-brown hair, clean-shaven with a pale to light complexion.
Although he normally wears sports clothes and a green and yellow Oakland Athletics cap, Tuesday he sported a black baseball cap turned backwards, sunglasses with gold wire frames, an olive drab suit, a green paisley print shirt and dark dress shoes.
Police are asking anyone who has information about the A’s robber to call Crime Stoppers, 235-TIPS. Tips remain anonymous, and callers may receive a reward of up to $1,000.
