PUC Rejects AT&T; Request: A proposed increase from 40 to 50 cents for AT&T; directory assistance calls in California was vetoed by the California Public Utilities Commission. AT&T; Communications of California sought the increase for information calls between the state’s 10 local service areas, saying it was losing $165,000 a year on the service. But the PUC said the loss was due to the company’s decision not to charge for directory assistance calls from pay telephones, hospitals, hotels and motels.
