The City Council on Tuesday designated Fairmount Cemetery as a historic landmark.

A city report said the cemetery, near the corner of Baldy Vista and Leadora avenues, may once have been an American Indian burial ground.

It was later used by settlers for the same purpose and was the first cemetery for Protestants in the San Gabriel Valley. The report said 10 Civil War soldiers and three World War I and World War II veterans are buried at the site.
