SANTA PAULA : Library to Place Tax Measure on Ballot
Officials of the Blanchard Community Library in Santa Paula have decided to place a special property tax on the November ballot to raise additional funds for the library.
The library now receives $35,000 a year from a special property tax of $5 per land parcel, but the tax will expire in June, said District Librarian Daniel O. Robles.
About 95% of the library’s annual budget of $261,000 comes from property taxes, Robles said.
Robles said the election will cost the library an estimated $15,000 to $20,000, which commission members hope to obtain through the library’s endowment fund and a bank loan.
This is the library’s second attempt at a special property tax.
A similar ballot item failed to net the needed two-thirds majority last November, Robles said.
The additional funds are crucial for the library, he said, because it is not a city agency and is ineligible for some city or county funds. The library is run by the Santa Paula Union High School District.
