Notes on a Scorecard - March 14, 1991

Having already signed defensive coordinator Jeff Fisher, the Rams are looking to land another Philadelphia Eagle. That would be none other than Jerome Brown. . . .

A trade for pass rusher Brown makes sense now that the Rams’ chances of drafting University of Miami defensive lineman Russell Maryland appear slim. Maryland is being projected to go in the top four. The Rams have the fifth pick. . . .

Brown is something of a folk hero in Southern California, where the tape of his fighting words before Miami’s loss to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl that decided the 1986 national championship has been played about 414 times on Jim Healy’s radio show. . . .

If you are in Moscow on Monday, you can catch the Mike Tyson-Razor Ruddock fight on free TV. That is Moscow in the Soviet Union, not Idaho. Boris Gubin, Valentin Yegorov and Boris Gultyay will be behind the microphones. . . .

Tyson and Ruddock don’t like each other. Tyson refused to be interviewed on a satellite hookup the other day until Ruddock left the room. . . .

Danny Carbajal’s expert managing and training of his brother Michael is an exception to the rule that members of the immediate family don’t belong in a fighter’s corner. Michael will make the next defense of his International Boxing Federation 108-pound title Sunday at Bally’s in Las Vegas against Javier Varguez on ESPN. . . .

Cal State Long Beach scored more runs against the University of Portland Tuesday--30--than it did points against Nevada Las Vegas Friday--29. . . .

Coach Jim Harrick says: “Las Vegas not only is more talented than anybody else, it’s older. It has three fifth-year seniors, a fourth-year senior and a fourth-year junior.” . . .

Five of Harrick’s six NCAA tournament teams at UCLA and Pepperdine have been eliminated by ACC teams. North Carolina of the ACC is in the same regional as the Bruins this year. . . .

“I’m looking for Don MacLean to step up and be the man on the court,” Harrick said. . . .

For the record: The state of Kentucky is represented in the tournament by Murray State. . . .

Pennsylvania leads all states with five entries: Penn State, Villanova, Temple, Pittsburgh and St. Francis. . . .

St. Francis is making its tournament debut but has had such outstanding players as the late Maurice Stokes and Norm Van Lier. . . .

The women’s tournament is wide open--plenty of good teams, but nobody as dominant as the Las Vegas men. . . .

Former Cal State Fullerton bomber Cedric Ceballos is making sure that the Phoenix Suns don’t miss super sub Eddie Johnson. . . .

Marty McSorley got more applause for being honored as King player of the month at the Forum Tuesday than Wayne Gretzky did for being honored as NHL player of the week. Maybe the Great One would receive a bigger hand if he got suspended for fighting. . . .

Willie O’Ree, who played for the Los Angeles Blades and San Diego Gulls in the Western Hockey League, will be among those saluted on old-timers’ night before the Gulls-Peoria Rivermen International Hockey League game March 24 at the San Diego Arena. . . .

O’Ree became the first black player in an NHL game when he appeared in a Boston Bruin uniform during the 1957-58 season. . . .

USC track and field alumni are bullish on new Coach Jim Bush. Parry O’Brien, Bob Seagren, Rink Babka and Mike Larrabee are expected to appear at the Trojans’ only home meet of the year against Iowa, Cal State Long Beach and San Diego State Saturday at noon at Cromwell Field. . . .

The field for the Volvo tournament at UCLA July 3-7, which includes Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendl, Pete Sampras and Michael Chang, is shaping up as the best for a local event since the old Pacific Southwest days at the L.A. Tennis Club. . . .

I like the idea of active jockeys being eligible for induction into the horse racing hall of fame. . . .

Clover Racing Stable manager Jeff Siegel would like to thank the NCAA selection committee. Putting his beloved Bruins in Syracuse for the first round means Siegel can catch UCLA and Penn State Friday, make the short plane trip to see his Galba run in the $100,000 Grey Lag at Aqueduct Saturday, and then return to Syracuse for the Bruins’ game Sunday if they are still playing. . . .

Siegel reports that 1989 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Prized is looking better than ever in training after being shelved by injuries and probably will return to racing in the Shoemaker Handicap, formerly the Premiere, April 28. . . .

Dave Stewart has a protege in the Oakland Athletics’ camp, young right-hander Reggie Harris. . . .

The unsuccessful comeback attempt of Jim Palmer, 45, makes Nolan Ryan, 44, look all the more remarkable. . . .

With each additional New York Met injury, Dwight Gooden’s price goes higher. . . .

Whatever happened to UCLA’s yellow uniforms?
