LOS ALAMITOS : Law Places Limits on Big Trucks, Sets Fees

Share

An ordinance establishing permit fees and routes for heavy or oversize trucks driven in the city was approved by the City Council this week.

A truck is “over-limit” and requires a transportation permit from the city if it weighs 4 or more tons, or is more than 10 feet high, 80 feet long or 8 1/2 feet wide, according to City Engineer Jeff Thompson.

The ordinance establishes permit fees of $15 for a three-day permit and $70 for an annual pass, he said.

A state law enacted last year established uniform guidelines on over-limit trucks but left it up to each city to decide where and when the trucks could travel through its streets.

Under the ordinance, over-limit trucks are allowed on the following streets: the full lengths within city limits of Katella and Cerritos avenues, Ball Road and Los Alamitos Boulevard, and partial stretches of Sausalito, Catalina, Cherry, Bloomfield and Reagan streets, Lexington and Serpentine drives and Farquhar Avenue.

Oversize trucks are prohibited from operating from 7 to 9 a.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m., after sunset and before sunrise, and on weekends or holidays. Also, the requirements call for warning signs to be posted on all over-limit trucks.
