About 57% of Americans want to go back to war to drive Iraqi President Saddam Hussein from power, according to a Newsweek poll released Saturday.

An even larger percentage, 77% of those surveyed, said they would support military action if Iraq employed chemical or biological weapons against rebel forces. Also, 65% said they think the United States should keep troops in Iraq and refuse to sign a permanent cease-fire if Hussein continues to use helicopter gunships against the rebels.

President Bush’s overall approval rating remained high, at 86%, with both men and women giving him high grades.

The Newsweek poll was done by the Gallup Organization, which conducted 763 telephone interviews Thursday and Friday. It has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
