Jackson to Be Examined in Alabama Amid TV Report He Is Out for Season
Bo Jackson is scheduled to be examined today by an orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham, Ala., amid a report by a Kansas City television station, quoting an unnamed source, that he will not play baseball this season.
The examination by Dr. James Andrews follows one made Friday in Kansas City. Royals’ team physician Steve Joyce declined to reveal the diagnosis from the Friday tests. The Royals have called a news conference for Tuesday.
Jackson has spent spring training on crutches after being injured after a long run in the Raiders’ 20-10 playoff victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Jan. 13 at the Coliseum.
WDAF-TV sports director Frank Boal reported that Royals’ doctors have told Jackson that all of his “athletic activity, including football, should cease for the next 9-12 months.”
A report in the San Diego Tribune on Friday quoted an unidentified source as saying Jackson has a disabling hip condition known as avascular necrosis.
