Long Beach city officials Monday assured the president of the local chapter of the National Organization of Women that they are giving rape cases top priority.

Officials met at City Hall with chapter President Gerrie Schipske after the local group urged the national organization to remove the city from consideration for NOW’s national convention in 1992. The local chapter cited 1990 statistics showing a 23.8% increase in reported rapes in the city. At the meeting Monday, Mayor Ernie Kell said: “Our image is very, very important. We want women to feel safe here.” He said representatives of the city and police officials would begin meeting with NOW members regularly to discuss their concerns.
