Proposals Would Declare Local Korean Monuments

Members of the city’s Korean-American community submitted a proposal Tuesday to have declared as a historic monument a church hall that once served as a center for the Korean independence movement.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles City Councilman Robert Farrell introduced a motion to name the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Van Buren Street “Dosan Ahn Chang Ho Square” in honor of the Korean political hero who helped found modern Korea.

Under the aegis of the Rotary Club of Koreatown, supporters hope to turn the area near USC, bordered by Budlong Avenue, 35th Street, Raymond Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard, into a corridor honoring the city’s first Korean immigrants.

“We want to turn this corridor into a place of history for all Americans and to remind those in Korea that important events took place in America for Korea,” Farrell said.
