NHL ROUNDUP : Hull Gets 80th Goal; Blues Win

Share

The St. Louis Blues’ Brett Hull became only the third player in NHL history to score 80 goals in a season, sparking a 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals Tuesday night at Landover, Md.

With six games remaining, Hull joined Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky as the only players to reach 80. Gretzky did it twice, getting 92 in 1981-82.

The Blues, who had gone six games without a victory, pulled to within three points of Chicago in the Norris Division. With six games left, the Blues still have a chance to win the division championship.

New Jersey 5, Pittsburgh 4--The Penguins seemed on their way to strengthening their hold on first place in the Patrick Division.

They held a 4-2 lead after two periods at East Rutherford, N.J.

But the Devils battled from behind for three goals. The last, by Patrik Sundstrom with 4:34 to play, left the playoff race wide open.

Pittsburgh has 81 points, the New York Rangers 80, New Jersey 74, Philadelphia 73 and Washington 72. Four will qualify.

Edmonton 7, Quebec 6--Mark Messier scored with 26 seconds left in overtime at Quebec.

The Oilers took a 5-2 lead, but Joe Sakic brought the Nordiques back with an assist and two goals.

Hartford 1, Boston 1--Doug Houda scored his first goal of the season midway through the second period at Hartford to get the Whalers a tie.

The tie increased Boston’s lead in the Adams Division to eight points with five games left.
